In the aftermath, reports of an acrimonious split between Adofo-Mensah and head coach Kevin O’Connell circulated, with some theories tying the tension to the team’s quarterback plan—specifically the draft-and-hold of quarterback JJ McCarthy ahead of Sam Darnold, who had been allowed to depart.
NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero pushed back on those narratives on The Rich Eisen Show (Feb. 3), saying there was no toxic dynamic between O’Connell and Adofo-Mensah. Pelissero emphasized that the two were friends who disagreed at times on how to handle the quarterback position, but there was no personal rift or plan to trade McCarthy.
Pelissero also explained that Adofo-Mensah’s dismissal stemmed from broader organizational factors, including the team’s challenging salary-cap situation and the overall draft results. He noted there were both hits and misses in the draft, but the combination of cap pressures and an unclear quarterback path contributed to the decision to move in a different direction.
According to Pelissero, the lack of a clear franchise quarterback under center left the Vikings with an unsustainable path forward, regardless of the McCarthy situation. He suggested that if the quarterback situation had been different, the outcome for Adofo-Mensah might have been different as well.
The development comes amid an offseason shakeup in Minnesota as the organization seeks long-term stability at quarterback and a sustainable cap framework. Pelissero’s remarks aim to clarify that the run of rumors surrounding a fractured relationship were unfounded, while highlighting the practical reasons behind the leadership change.
