Fangio, 67, has served as the Eagles’ defensive coordinator and playcaller since 2024, helping Philadelphia reach the Super Bowl LIX and field a stout defense. Despite frequent head-coaching chatter in past cycles, he did not draw head-coaching interviews this time around.
According to PhillyVoice’s Jimmy Kempski, the Eagles reportedly reached out to former defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon to gauge interest in his old job should Fangio depart; Gannon has since taken the Green Bay Packers’ defensive coordinator position.
Jim Schwartz, who recently expressed visible frustration after not landing the Browns’ head coaching job, was another candidate the Eagles considered contacting. Schwartz has not secured a new role since and may be waiting to see if he could reclaim a defensive playcalling run in Philadelphia, though Fangio appears to be staying “for now.”
With Fangio’s status in flux, the Eagles are likely weighing internal and external options to ensure a smooth transition if he retires after a career that spans 25 seasons as an NFL coordinator or head coach.
For now, Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni’s staff remains intact, and Fangio will return for a third season coordinating Philadelphia’s defense, while the organization continues to plan ahead for potential leadership changes at that role.
