The case centers on the NCAA’s five-year clock and how seasons are counted across sports. Heinecke’s three lacrosse appearances for Ohio State in 2021 are being tallied against his football eligibility, a rule nuance that differs from football’s redshirt framework.
Heinecke joined Oklahoma in 2022 after leaving Ohio State and redshirted in 2023. In 2023–24 he mostly contributed on special teams, but in the 2025 season he emerged as a starting inside linebacker in November, posting 74 tackles, 12 tackles for loss, four passes defended, three sacks, and a forced fumble.
Losing Heinecke would widen Oklahoma’s linebacker churn, joining Kendal Daniels, Sammy Omosigho, and Kobie McKinzie as offseason departures. The Sooners’ current inside linebackers are Kip Lewis and Cole Sullivan, leaving the staff in need of depth at the position.
Heinecke plans to appeal the NCAA ruling, and if the appeal fails, he could seek opportunities in the NFL with a thinner resume. He has been participating in Panini Senior Bowl practices, which could still help him gain visibility with scouts.
Ohio State’s recent recruiting news underscores the program’s sustained strength. The Buckeyes inked five five-star recruits in 2025, including Jay Timmons, Jerquaden Guilford, Khary Wilder, Cincere Johnson, and Chris Henry Jr., as the Big Ten dominated the five-star leaderboard with 13 of 32 commits.
