Ventrone is widely regarded as one of the league’s top special teams coaches. He previously served as the Browns’ special teams coordinator and assistant head coach for three years, after playing 8 NFL seasons himself, with the bulk of his snaps coming on special teams.
The Rams’ decision comes after a disappointing 2025 season for their special teams, which contributed to a late-season shakeup that saw Chase Blackburn dismissed as ST coordinator. Los Angeles finished with an 11-4 record but lost four games largely due to special teams miscues.
On the Steelers’ side, former Steelers offensive line coach Pat Meyer accepted a role with the Buffalo Bills, returning to the AFC East after 2022–25 with Pittsburgh. Meyer’s unit work helped the Steelers’ O-line improve significantly in 2025, but he will not be returning to Pittsburgh.
With Ventrone headed to L.A. and Meyer heading to Buffalo, the Steelers will move forward without either of those names in their search for a special teams coordinator. Pittsburgh has not publicly identified any additional candidates for the role as of now.
