Day is widely regarded as one of the NFL’s top quarterback coaches and has been instrumental in Justin Herbert’s development. He was a serious candidate for the Chargers’ OC job earlier this month, a position that ultimately went to Mike McDaniel.
With Jim Harbaugh and the Chargers passing on Day, he is now free to interview elsewhere as a promotion, and his ties to the Harbaugh coaching tree plus his reputation as a QB teacher have elevated him among Giants candidates to coach their developing quarterback, Jaxson Dart.
Though Day has never held the title of offensive coordinator at the NFL or college level, his résumé includes a steady progression in quarterback-focused roles: QC with the 49ers in 2008, Bears QBs coach in 2010–2011, Washington assistant OL/QC, Dolphins tight ends coach (2016–2018), 49ers QBs coach (2019–2020, then with the Chargers as passing game coordinator and QBs coach in 2021–2022), and a return to the Chargers after a stint with the Texans in 2023.
Meanwhile, a Gi ants OC candidate, Charlie Weis Jr., appears to have dropped out as of Jan. 30, with sources indicating Dart pushed for Weis Jr. but LSU may keep him in college. As the Giants continue their search, Day remains a prominent, trusted name connected to the Harbaugh coaching network and a potential fit to mold Dart into a productive NFL starter.
