Whitmer, 34, has a varied coaching background that includes early stops as a Georgia Graduate Assistant in 2019 and a Clemson GA in 2020, followed by three seasons as the Los Angeles Chargers’ offensive quality control coach (2021-23) and a 2024 stint as a pass game specialist with the Atlanta Falcons.
Ahead of the 2025-26 campaign, Whitmer was brought to Indiana as co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, a role that put him at the center of the Hoosiers’ offensive development.
According to the sources, Whitmer played a key part in developing Fernando Mendoza at Indiana, a passer described as having reached Heisman Trophy-and national championship-level results for the future NFL quarterback.
If the Buccaneers move forward with Whitmer, he would join Baker Mayfield in Tampa Bay, pairing with the veteran quarterback to guide the team’s QB development and overall passing attack.
At this stage, the Buccaneers have not announced a hire, and Thursday’s reporting positions Whitmer as a leading candidate as they refine their offensive staff for the 2026-27 campaign. The information comes from Wolfe (NFL Network) and Nakos (On3 Sports), with additional coverage at ClutchPoints.
