Adrian Peterson announced the move on Instagram, posting a photo with Michael Strahan, a TSU alum, and urging Houston to embrace his brother. “Houston, show some love … He’ll be playing QB @tsufootball right here in H-Town,” Adrian wrote, highlighting the supportive angle of the family’s decision.
Nelson’s recruitment featured heavy interest from several Power Five programs. Ole Miss and Texas Tech were among the leaders, with Texas Tech viewed as the frontrunner by ON3 (about an 81% likelihood) and Ole Miss at roughly 19%. Other suitors included Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Baylor and Louisville, with Ole Miss and Texas Tech initially leading the way.
The commitment came during the early national signing period, with Nelson officially enrolling at Texas Southern on December 3. He joins TSU as part of head coach Cris Dishman’s efforts to revive the program and capitalize on increased attention around the Tigers.
A multi-sport athlete from Forney, Texas, Nelson brings notable track-and-field credentials to the quarterback role. His athleticism is evidenced by a 5-10 high jump, a 22-0.5 long jump, and a 200-meter dash in 24.52 seconds, in addition to his on-field play.
As a high school QB, Nelson threw for 1,165 yards and 77 completions on 152 attempts in 2023, adding 634 rushing yards and 7 rushing touchdowns as the team reached the Texas 4A Division II playoffs. In 2024, he improved to 2,298 passing yards on 137-of-252 passing and added 731 rushing yards with 7 rushing TDs, underscoring his dual-threat potential.
Texas Southern expects Nelson to challenge for immediate playing time, aligning with the program’s goal of returning to prominence under Dishman. The Peterson family’s Houston roots and Strahan’s legacy at TSU frame Nelson’s arrival as a landmark moment for the Tigers.
