Darrell Bevell is a former Super Bowl champion offensive coordinator, winning with the Seattle Seahawks in the 2013 season. Over a 30-year coaching career, Bevell has spent 15 seasons as an NFL offensive coordinator, and most recently served in the AFC East as the Miami Dolphins’ quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator.
Lunda Wells, while on the list, is viewed by some observers as not a serious candidate for the role. Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic noted that Wells isn’t being viewed as a top contender, a conclusion tied to the Rooney Rule expansion that led to broader screening for coordinator openings. Wells is currently Dallas’ tight ends coach and interviewed for the Jets’ vacancy.
Greg Roman and Ronald Curry bring different profiles to the process. Roman, 53, is a highly experienced coach with 31 years in the profession, including substantial time with the Harbaugh family; he was the Los Angeles Chargers’ offensive coordinator before this offseason. Curry, a former eight-year NFL wide receiver, has progressed through coaching roles and served as the Bills’ quarterbacks coach for the past two seasons.
Frank Reich remains the favorite to land the job, according to ESPN’s Rich Cimini, with Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic likewise signaling Reich as the likely choice. Jets X-Factor’s Nick Faria expressed growing confidence that Reich will be the OC. Even if Reich is selected, the Jets still need to fill other elements of the offensive staff, including a passing game coordinator after firing Scott Turner and a quarterbacks coach following Charles London’s departure.
