Steichen is set to return to Indy, but the Colts may need to address their coaching staff if Cooter departs. Defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo, hired for the 2025 season, has been the subject of head coaching interviews, yet remains with the team for a second year.
According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the Philadelphia Eagles have interviewed Cooter for their vacant OC spot after parting with Kevin Patullo following one season calling the plays. The move would bring an outside voice to Philadelphia’s offense, which struggled under Patullo.
The Colts’ offense finished among the league’s best in points per game (27.4) despite not having a constant quarterback for all 17 games, and Cooter’s experience coaching Jonathan Taylor could translate to benefiting a backfield like the New York Giants’ Saquon Barkley if he stays in the running for play-caller duties elsewhere.
Recent reporting also indicates Cooter will have an interview with the New York Giants to join what is described as John Harbaugh’s coaching staff, highlighting the potential for another high-profile OC move.
If Cooter does leave, Steichen would lose one of his longest-tenured coordinators, underscoring the ongoing challenge of maintaining stability on the Colts’ coaching staff amid external interest.
