Wells, 42, has coached football since 2006 and has worked exclusively in the NFL since 2012. He began with the New York Giants as an offensive quality control coach, then served as assistant offensive line coach before rising to tight ends coach (2018-19). He joined the Cowboys in 2020 and has been their tight ends coach for the past six seasons.
This week Wells also served as the West team head coach at the Shrine Bowl, where he described the head-coaching duties as primarily logistical—organizing schedules and flow—while stressing that coaching the players between the lines remains consistent with his TE duties.
Reaction on social media has been favorable, with Cowboys analyst Marcus Mosher praising Wells for developing Dallas’s tight ends and contributing to the run game, calling him one of the league’s most respected coaches and noting he deserves consideration for an OC role.
This remains a developing story in the Jets’ ongoing offensive coordinator search, and additional updates are expected as interviews progress.
