Cleveland’s search reportedly included multiple high-profile candidates, but four coaches reportedly turned them down: Mike McDaniel, John Harbaugh, Chris Shula and Jesse Minter. The Browns pressed forward in hopes of adding an offensive-minded strategist to anchor the franchise.
Monken, previously the Baltimore Ravens’ offensive coordinator from 2023 to 2025, will take on his first head-coaching role. He also spent three seasons running the offense for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2016-2018) and had a prior stint with the Browns as offensive coordinator for one season.
In addition to his NFL experience, Monken was once considered a candidate to join John Harbaugh with the New York Giants, but Cleveland ultimately won the pursuit, according to reporting cited by ESPN.
Monken’s hiring adds continuity to his offensive background, which has included stints across the NFL and a brief college tenure. He also led Southern Miss for three seasons, compiling a 13-25 record there, prior to his pro-level coaching career.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter announced the Browns’ decision, noting that Monken will lead Cleveland as it rebuilds under new leadership. The move aims to reset the franchise’s trajectory after a challenging 2025 season.
