Orthopedic surgeon Dr. David Chao, a former Chargers team doctor who has become a high-profile voice on NFL injuries, stated in a video, “There’s no question Drake Maye has a right shoulder injury,” fueling a national conversation about the quarterback’s health.
Patriots insider Greg Bedard of The Boston Sports Journal pushed back on the severity, saying on X/Twitter that any Maye shoulder “injury” is not believed to be an issue at this time.
The on-field moment many pointed to occurred late in the third quarter when Maye was tackled by safety Talanoa Hufanga and grabbed at his right shoulder pad. While Chao highlighted that moment as evidence of pain, others noted Maye’s actions could also be a routine pad adjustment, a point echoed by Dr. Brian Sutterer, who observed Maye also tugging at his left pad.
Despite the questions, Maye connected on a 31-yard pass to Mack Hollins on the very next play, helping set up a Patriots field-goal attempt as snow and gusting winds crept into the game and limited passing opportunities.
Coach Mike Vrabel said the conditions worsened around that time, requiring the team to lean more on the running game. Maye threw only one pass in the fourth quarter, highlighting how weather and game flow influenced the offense.
With an official update still pending, Maye’s health status remains unclear as the Patriots prepare for the Super Bowl, leaving fans and analysts to watch for any definitive medical information from the team.
