Head coach Sean Payton and general manager George Paton spoke to the media to close out the 2025 season, providing updates on Nix’s status. Payton said he remains fairly optimistic that there will be no lingering injuries into 2026 training camp, but he noted a previously undisclosed predisposed condition identified by Nix’s surgeon.
Nix has been in the Broncos’ facility this week and is progressing in his rehab, moving from a scooter to crutches to a walking boot. Payton described Nix as handling the rehab process like a pro, while acknowledging the disappointment of watching peers advance in the league.
Payton also clarified that his past comments about Nix’s ankle injuries were merely a remark, adding humor is off-limits in discussing his rehab going forward. He remains confident in Nix’s ability to rebound and return to full health.
Paton reinforced the recovery timeline, signaling a three-to-four month return window and suggesting Nix could be back “close to May.” That window means he will miss part of the Broncos’ offseason program but not training camp.
Paton stressed that having a franchise-caliber quarterback like Nix in year two could help the Broncos in free-agent negotiations, and the organization plans to stay prudent yet aggressive in pursuing upgrades regardless of other factors.
With the rehab underway and a targeted return timeline in place, the Broncos continue to plan around Nix’s rehabilitation while keeping an eye on the quarterback position and offseason moves ahead of Week 1 next season.
