KC announced a change at offensive coordinator, with Matt Nagy not having his contract renewed and Eric Bieniemy returning to lead the unit. Bieniemy previously served as KC’s OC from 2018 to 2022, winning Super Bowls LIV and LVII, before moving to the Washington Commanders to run their offense in 2023.
Head coach Andy Reid discussed the reunion, praising Bieniemy’s energy and noting the Bears’ strong season as a credit to the coaching staff there. Reid attributed the Bears’ performance as part of EB’s overall impact and expressed optimism about the return to Kansas City.
Bieniemy most recently served as the Chicago Bears’ running backs coach, contributing to a potent ground game that featured D’Andre Swift and rookie Kyle Monangai. Chicago finished third in the NFL in rushing yards per game, trailing only the Bills and Ravens.
Reid also spoke warmly about Nagy, saying he supported Nagy’s pursuit of another head coaching opportunity and stressing that the two coaches bring different flavors to the same system. He described EB as direct with players and coaches, while acknowledging both have been productive within KC’s offense.
Beyond personality, Reid highlighted Bieniemy’s strengths: deep knowledge of the offense and strong leadership skills, which he said have long anchored the Chiefs’ offensive leadership group. Bieniemy’s past tenure delivered a top-tier offense for four of five years, with one dip to No. 4 in 2019.
Since Bieniemy’s departure in 2022, Kansas City’s offense has ranked outside the top five in successive seasons, a trend the Chiefs hope to reverse with the return of their former OC and his proven play-calling and leadership approach.
