According to ESPNβs Field Yates, the updated contract language took effect Tuesday and changes the timing and structure of certain option bonuses set for 2026, 2027, and 2028. Under the new terms, those bonuses must be exercised seven days before each regular season begins, rather than by the 15th day of the league year.
In addition, the payment framework for those option bonuses has been revised to benefit Garrett, reflecting the teamβs desire to secure continuity at a key position while providing clearer paycheck timing for the veteran pass rusher.
Another adjustment moves $8 million from Garrettβs 2029 and 2030 base salaries into roster bonuses, which will be paid earlier in each league year. This shift gives Cleveland more immediate cap flexibility while preserving Garrettβs overall compensation.
The adjustments come after Garrettβs exceptional 2023 season, which solidified his role as the cornerstone of Clevelandβs defense and provided the team with leverage to revisit contract terms in a way that could aid future cap management.
The Browns have emphasized that the changes are aimed at balancing Garrettβs pay with team finances, ensuring continued production on defense while maintaining cap room for potential roster needs in coming seasons.
